7 Warning Signs of Termites Every Florida Homeowner Should Know

Termites are called "silent destroyers" for a reason. A colony can be active in your home for years before you notice any visible damage — by which point they may have caused tens of thousands of dollars in structural harm. Florida is one of the most termite-active states in the country, making early detection critical for every homeowner.

Here are the seven warning signs you should never ignore.

1. Mud Tubes on Your Foundation

Subterranean termites — the most destructive species in Florida — live in the soil and build pencil-width mud tubes to travel between their colony and their food source (your home's wood). These tubes protect them from predators and maintain humidity. Finding mud tubes running along your foundation, crawl space walls, or interior walls is one of the most reliable signs of an active infestation.

2. Discarded Wings Near Windows and Doors

Once a termite colony matures, it produces "swarmers" — winged reproductives that fly out to establish new colonies. After swarming, they shed their wings. Finding small piles of discarded wings near windows, doors, or light fixtures — especially after a warm rain — indicates a mature colony nearby, possibly already inside your structure.

3. Hollow-Sounding Wood

Termites eat wood from the inside out, leaving a thin outer shell intact. Tap on wood that you suspect may be infested — if it sounds hollow or papery rather than solid, termites may have consumed the interior. Check baseboards, door frames, window sills, and structural beams.

4. Frass (Drywood Termite Droppings)

Drywood termites — common in Florida attics, window frames, and furniture — push their droppings (called frass) out of small holes in the wood. Frass looks like tiny pellets or sawdust and is often found in small piles below infested wood. If you find what looks like fine sawdust that you can't explain, look up — there's likely an infestation above.

5. Bubbling or Peeling Paint

Paint that bubbles, blisters, or peels without an obvious moisture source can indicate termites feeding just below the surface. As termites digest wood, they produce moisture that can cause paint to fail. This is often mistaken for a plumbing leak or humidity issue.

6. Tight-Fitting Doors and Windows

Doors and windows that suddenly become difficult to open or close can result from termite damage warping the surrounding wood frame. This is often one of the first functional signs homeowners notice, though it's frequently attributed to humidity or settling.

7. Visible Termites

While termites typically stay hidden, you may occasionally see them — especially during a swarm or if you disturb infested wood. Subterranean termite workers are pale, soft-bodied, and about the size of a grain of rice. Swarmers look similar to flying ants but have equal-length wings (ant wings are unequal).
