Subterranean Termites Close to Home — Chiefland, Florida

During a routine pest control maintenance call in Chiefland, Florida, Turbo Pest Solutions technician Robert came across something every homeowner in Levy County should be aware of — subterranean termites active just feet from a residential structure.

What We Found on the Job

The homeowner was in the process of moving, and during the exterior walkthrough, technicians spotted a wooden structure near the property line. On closer inspection, subterranean termites were observed actively moving in and out of the soil — right next to the home's foundation.

What made this find especially interesting was the presence of fire ants in the same area. Levy County fire ants are known to prey on termites, and in this case, both species were coexisting in close proximity. While fire ants will eat termites and can compete for territory, their presence does not eliminate a termite threat — and it certainly doesn't replace professional treatment.

How Close Is Too Close?

Subterranean termites live in the soil and travel upward to find wood to feed on. When a colony is active just a few feet from a structure, it's only a matter of time before they find a way in — through cracks in the foundation, gaps around pipes, or any wood-to-soil contact point.

This inspection is a good reminder that termite activity doesn't always announce itself with visible damage. Sometimes the colony is right outside your door, and you'd never know without a professional walkthrough.

What This Means for Homeowners

  • Subterranean termites can be active in your yard without any visible signs inside your home
  • Fire ants and termites can coexist — one does not eliminate the other
  • Wood structures near the soil line are high-risk entry points
  • Routine pest control maintenance calls catch these issues before they become infestations
  • Early treatment is far less costly than structural repairs after the fact

Protecting Your Home
