Where Do Ants Come From, and Why They’re in Your Home
Alien Ants? Kryptonian Ants?!
People believe ants are almost supernatural sometimes. That they’re able to do things such as breathing underwater, lifting 50 times what their body weight is, predict the weather, and even eat through concrete.
These aren’t true, at least not completely.
Well yes ants are hard to kill with water, and they can lift anywhere from 10 times to 50 times their body weight, there’s no evidence that they can predict the weather, and they’re definitely not eating through concrete. Not exactly the best snack.
The truth of the matter though, is ants are fantastic at finding crevices and cracks that our eyes can’t even begin to notice. They can find their ways in no matter how small it is. Once they’re in and find a food source they release a pheromone that tells the other ants where the food source is.
Why Are You In My House?
When they use these sneaky little ways to get into our homes, they soon realize it’s not only in all you can eat buffet. It’s free reign with plenty of living space to take over. Who would ever want to leave that behind? Free Bed and Breakfast everyday. Once they’re inside though, they’re everywhere. You can’t do anything without ants also being there, doing it with you. They’re in cake mixes, on your sweets, and in every drink that you just possibly leave sitting around.
They get grounded into every part of your home until you find that you just can’t do anything without ants. The problem is when you look up ‘quick fixes for ants’ or ‘at home remedies for ants’ on Google you get hundreds of thousands of results. What most people don’t realize, or don’t know to catch, is that most of these have the word “repellent“. Everything is a “natural repellent” or suggest you buy a certain “repellent“. But repellents are actually what you should avoid at all costs.
Begone Evil Bug!!
Repellents only push bugs around rather than actually taking care of the problem. Repellents push bugs further into your walls and deeper into your house. Unfortunately this doesn’t get rid of the source, and definitely doesn’t take care of the problem.
The best way to take care of these past once they’ve established themselves is to do a deep clean. Getting rid of as much open food source for them as possible fixing any leaks and finding any built-out moisture areas are the best ways to prevent them from staying. The problem arises when you’ve already been spraying repellents or if you’ve been self-treating. It’s best to try and get as much residue up as you can from whatever self treatment you’ve tried. This could be baking soda, natural sprays like vinegar or lemon juice, or anything else that Google might have might have recommended. It’s best to get up as much residue as you can so they don’t decide to burrow deeper into your home.
The next best step is to call your local Pest Control experts and ask their opinions or suggestions. These people work with ants and pests like them every single day and really know how to get them under control. The treatment is all dependent on the company you choose to call, so it’s best to do your research. Looking at reviews, calling around, and understanding the education behind it are the best ways to decide who should come through with the treatment.
But How Do You Do It?
At Turbo Pest Solutions in Citrus County, we found the best way to get rid of ants and keep them gone is to do a general home maintenance. A lot of times this not only keeps the ants away but any other pest that could be finding its way into your home. Getting this treatment every 3 months. Can prove to be very good for your home.
With this treatment we do a spray of baseboards and sometimes higher areas. If the higher areas are not over areas where people eat, or accessible by people, than a lot of time as we will spray there. We never put the spray where someone could easily end up with it in their mouth or on their face or hands. We also bait accordingly depending on what kind of ant is in the home. Depending on the ant, there are different baits that need to be used. We go according to whatever the label says. For instance, you can’t bait a crazy ant with the same bait you’d use for something like a ghost ant.
